Dealing With Nitrogen Robbing in a No-Till Garden

Gardening MistakesWe have (and love) a no-till garden. This means we do not disturb the soil by turning, tilling or double-digging. Each spring and fall we add some kind of organic matter on top of the soil, and then we walk away. By and large, this is not only the easiest approach, but it is more sustainable, and less damaging to our local environment. It builds top soil instead of destroying it. It improves existing soil composition (ours is almost entirely red clay). It makes weeding and watering more or less unnecessary. It’s a total win for us.

That Time We Remembered That We Have Bees

BeesSo, we keep bees… something I have yet to talk about here. Truthfully, we haven’t been the most successful beekepers. Honestly, don’t ask me for beekeeping advice. We read all of the books, watched all of the videos… we got bubkes. (Side Note: My toddler is now jumping up and down screaming “BUBKES!” at the top of her lungs and laughing hysterically.)

Growing Your Own Medicinal Herbs – Why Bother?

So, we already addressed what holistic health means, and the start of my own medicinal herb garden. Now I’d like to address exactly why I choose to grow my own herbs whenever I can, instead of just purchasing herbs from other sources. Right up front, my hope is to plant a seed (pardon the pun) in everyone who reads this. I want people to be curious. I want them to research, question and evaluate. I want them to want to do this, too!

Garden Fresh…

Garden Fresh

I think that people who don’t garden tend to have a very idealistic view of what it must be like. Zen hours in a beautifully manicured cottage garden, surrounded by perfectly robust plants, just dripping in fresh produce. Nary a critter or weed to be seen. Beautiful, golden rays caressing your shoulders in warmth and gentle light. Cue the lounge chair and the obligatory margarita.
